National perinatology conference; symposium on extreme preterm birth

The annual conference in perinatology organized by the Swedish Society for Perinatal Medicine took place in Stockholm on 24-25 October 2024.

In addition to three members of the N4 research group presenting abstracts (and Pontus winning an award for the best presentation), Prof Magnus Domellöf, together with Karin Pettersson from Stockholm hosted a symposium on extreme preterm birth.

Magnus and Karin, together with a working group appointed by The Swedish Neonatal Society and the Perinatal-ARG within the Swedish Association for Obstetrics and Gynecology, earlier in 2024 updated the guidelines on the management of preterm births and infants born before gestational week 27.
Alongside the revised guidelines, an information sheet for parents was developed.

During the symposium, both the revised guidelines and the parental information was presented in-depth.
This was followed by a panel discussion on the new parents’ information and how best to use this in practice.
The panel members were Emma Åkerlund (Falun), Ingela Varli (Stockholm), Jana Brodszki (Lund), Sven Lindell (Helsingborg), Anders Elfvin (Göteborg) and Linda Wallström (Uppsala).

“We had a really deep and nuanced discussion during the session, everyone appreciates the updated guidelines, and even though there are remaining differences in opinions, the variation in clinical practice between centers is minimal, much smaller than ever before” said Magnus Domellöf (professor of pediatrics) about the symposium.
